CRL chair says film is blasphemous, vulgar

The chairperson of the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL), Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva, has raised concerns about local film Inxeba – The Wound.

Mkhwanazi-Xaluva, who spoke at a media briefing on Tuesday, complained about the film’s strong, blasphemous language and statements. She said she had applied to increase the age restriction.

Mkhwanazi-Xaluva said she received complaints from a chief in the Eastern Cape.

“When children go to initiation school, parents have to practice ukuzila (mourning) where they abstain from sex.

“Even people who prepare the food for the homecoming ceremony must abstain,” said Mkhwanazi-Xaluva.

She pointed out that the film was blasphemous and not in line with the constitution.

“The characters in the movie say even Jesus Christ and Shaka Zulu are gay because they are always surrounded by men.

“That could be blasphemous for Christians and people from the Zulu kingdom,” she said.

“I do not understand how people can be called with their mother’s private parts when women are not even allowed to be present at the initiation.”

Publicist Cait Pansegrouw, said no one had challenged the film’s age restriction.

“In our research we came across many accounts of sexual contact between men while they are on the mountain.

“The sex scenes are not unrealistic in terms of what may happen when characters in these situations are forced to express their love in secret. ”
