CAF punishes SuperSport
United get R200k fine for fans’ invasion
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has rubbed salt to the wounds of SuperSport United after slapping the club with a R205 950 ($15 000) fine for what it calls a security flaw in the Confederation Cup final on Saturday.
TP Mazembe clinched the title after a 2-1 aggregate win over Matsatsantsa a Pitori over two legs at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Chaotic scenes after the final whistle ensued as Mazembe fans invaded the pitch to celebrate the win.
SuperSport can feel aggrieved for having to pay a fine for a discretion of the opposition fans while theirs remained disciplined.
The club from the Democtratic Republic of Congo meanwhile received a slap on the wrist with a $5 000 fine.
The sanction will could be the last straw as club CEO Stan Matthews had in the past blasted the football federation for the shambolic origination of the tournament saying they would re-evaluate their future participation.
“In pursuant to Articles 83 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code, SuperSport has been fined 15 000 US Dollars for the security flaw in the organization of the match,” the CAF statement said.
“The South African club has also been cautioned against a repeat of such incident, or risk playing their games behind closed doors.”
Mazembe bagged R18-million for winning the competition, while Matsatsantsa got R8.5 million.
