Mamelodi Sundowns supporter mobilisation manager Alex Shakoane, who was nabbed driving at 175km/h in a 120km highway, has been slammed for reckless driving.

Shakoane, 68, is set to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court today to face charges of reckless and negligent driving as well as exceeding the speed limit.

Shakoane, popularly known as “Goldfinger”, was caught on Saturday in Mbombela and released on R500 bail.

He was driving his Mercedes-Benz AMG and it was not immediately clear where he was rushing to.

But a traffic officer who was on the scene told Sowetan Shakoane had claimed he was rushing to a graduation ceremony in Mbombela.

“Sometimes people say lots of excuses, some even lie that they are rushing to hospitals when caught speeding,” said a traffic officer who did not want to be named.

The officer said they suspected Shakoane was heading to the plenary of the Motsepe Foundation’s Christmas concert that took place yesterday.

The concert is hosted annually in Mbombela with a big line-up of musicians. Artists also spend time with the less privileged and donate food and clothing in the name of Sundowns boss Patrice Motsepe.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) strongly criticised Shakoane yesterday.

It called for public figures to be exemplary when it comes to obeying the rules of the road.

“The conduct of this soccer official is strongly unacceptable considering the fact that there are many soccer players who die on the road every year,” said RTMC spokesman Simon Zwane.

Sundowns spokesman Thulani Thuswa expressed shock at hearing the news.

Thuswa said he was unable to comment as he was struggling to get hold of Shakoane.

Shakoane could not be reached for comment.
