Winlock puts boxing on map at Eldorado Park

Township a venue that used to stage exciting fights

Shanell Winlock’s Victory Sport Productions returns to Eldorado Park, south of Johannesburg, on Sunday.

That is where the new lady in the promotion of professional boxing staged her first tournament in May.

Winlock will stage an eight-bout development tournament at Don Mateman Hall (2pm). The event is dubbed “Westside versus Southside” because five boxers from Eldorado Park will be fighting against those from the west of Joburg.

“Local boys are Enslin Booysens, Tumi Nakedi, Steve Dewu, Themba Ntuli and Onkgopotse Tshehla,” Winlock said.

Interestingly, most of the boxers from the west are trained by Winlock’s husband Bernie Pailman in Westbury.

They are Tebogo Malose, Mfundisi Ngema, Masixole Kwesa and Linda Ntshingila.

Winlock said the aim was to get boxers from Eldorado Park active.

That part of Johannesburg was once one of the popular boxing venues. In fact, local promoters Reggie Hilmer and Gavin Hope were the first to take boxing back to the Don Mateman Hall which had become a white elephant.

Malose will take on Lucky Makubela over six rounds, while Ngema will fight Booysens, also over six rounds. Nakedi and Dewu will fight for territorial supremacy over four rounds, while Tshehla will face Fani Masilo over four rounds.

Kwesa and Ntuli will meet over four rounds with Ntshingila taking on Aaron Seneke over the same number of rounds.

Entrance fee is R50 and R100.
