Chilly Boys just too hot

Amakhosi fall as Mabaso goal settles score

- By Yonela Mofu at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium

Chippa United proved once again that they are not going to be pushovers in their own backyard.

The Chilli Boys maintained their impressive run in the Absa Premiership with a superb 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs last night.

A fifth-minute goal by Abel Mabaso ensured United picked up yet another big scalp and they have now gone 10 games without defeat.

Chippa coach Teboho Moloi warned ahead of the game that his team wanted to “settle the score” with Steve Komphela’s side and they did just that before a largely partisan Amakhosi crowd.

Chippa got off to the best of starts thanks to some superb footwork and trickery from Mark Mayambela in the fifth minute.

The fit-again midfielder dummied his way past the Chiefs defence and laid off to Mabaso who slotted home from point blank range.

The home team continued to control the game and the frustration soon showed, when in the space of nine minutes, three Chiefs players – Siyabonga Ngezana, Teenage Hadebe and Willard Katsande – were booked before the half hour mark.

In between all of that, Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune had to be at his best.

Amakhosi’s first real chance came in the 32nd minute when Hendrick Ekstein hit the outside of the upright with Chippa goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi beaten on the near post.

After the break, Ekstein had a good chance in front of goal but blasted the attempt high over the crossbar. He was subbed straight after the miss-kick with Komphela bringing on Gustavo Paez.

Midfielder George Maluleka’s dipping free-kick came close to levelling the score in the 75th minute as it slipped narrowly over the bar.
