The late Galelemogwe Miriam Mothale was a loving mother and a political activist.
Mothale, known to those who love her as “Gale”, developed the love for politics at the young age. She joined the ANC as a 22-year-old in 1969, serving the community of Dube, Soweto, with verve.
“My mother was a devoted ANC member and her love for the movement was uncontested,” said her daughter Mbofi. “She always spoke about the ANC and was knowledgeable about politics.”
Mothale, who was adored by many people because of her positive attitude and bravery, died on Friday last week after months of illness. She was 70.
Mbofi went on to describe her mother as a “very strong woman”.
“She was a fearless person who was always ready to face challenges. She was a positive and selfless woman. She was a courageous person who fought her illness right until the end,” Mbofi said.
“Everyone who came in contact with her would always boast about her charismatic character, her ability to make light of situations, her brutal honesty and her unwavering love for her family and the ANC. Gale will be sorely missed and eternally loved.”
Mothale was born in North West in 1947, before the family moved to Johannesburg. She attended high school at Morris Isaacson High in White City Jabavu, Soweto. In her adult years, she worked as a receptionist at a hardware company and later at Edcon.
Mothale is survived by three children and four grandchildren.
