‘We didn’t play like AmaZulu’

Coach laments defensive play

AmaZulu coach Cavin Johnson has admitted that they were lucky to come away with a point from their 1-1 draw against Orlando Pirates at Orlando Stadium at the weekend.

Pirates defender Ntsikelelo Nyauza scored an own goal but made amends by getting the equaliser in the first half.

“I think we didn’t really play like AmaZulu can play. I thought the first half we were okay and we got the goal, but I thought we could have got a second one as well. Maybe it could have eased the nerves, but again we made a mistake [for Pirates to equalise],” Johnson reflected.

“I don’t think we were in the game in the second half and we were lucky not to concede. But we came here and got one point, we are happy.”

The 59-year-old further said that they were on the back foot for the better part of the second half.

“We always knew what was going to happen and we spoke about it. We tried to get the ball to the wide areas ... and we didn’t do that correctly.

“We found ourselves going backwards all the time and we found ourselves on our own 18 line, which is not normal for the type of football we like to play, but it’s a lesson and in future, we will try to come out,” Johnson added.

Meanwhile, AmaZulu captain Mbongeni Gumede is optimistic about their season after three wins, six draws and three losses in 12 games. “I don’t think we are doing as bad as people expected us to do,” he said.

AmaZulu are away to Cape Town City on Friday.
