Thobejane backs team

Baroka mentor content with depth

- By Tiyani wa ka Mabasa

Baroka have the worst defence in the league, but their head coach Kgoloko Thobejane is not pressing panic buttons.

Thobejane’s charges lost 3-1 to Orlando Pirates at the weekend. They have conceded 13 goals in their last five matches and 22 in total.

As much as Baroka have the second-best attack with 20 goals behind Mamelodi Sundowns (25), their defending leaves a lot to be desired.

Thobejane admitted that they defended too deep against Pirates, but that does not mean he would be rushing to the transfer market.

“We came here with the aim of collecting three points and having a good start,” he said.

“First half we didn’t make it and we were defending too deep, giving Pirates a chance to play. We didn’t defend well and we started to feel very much confused.”

Quizzed on whether he intends to use the current transfer window to bolster his squad, he maintained that he’s happy with his squad.

“Yes of course we lost, but this thing of the transfer market to us… We have a team and we believe in them. The team that we have is enough.”

To make matters worse, Baroka will be without influential midfielder Letladi Madubanya who will be serving a one-match suspension when they take on AmaZulu at home on Sunday. “Yes he got his fourth yellow card [against Pirates], but there’s a replacement for him.” Gift Motupa has still not fully recovered from a groin injury and is likely to miss the match against Usuthu.
