Chiefs to know extent of Mahlasela’s injury today

Komphela fears the worst for new star

Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela feels their new attacking reinforcements will solve the team’s past weakness which has been scoring goals.

Chiefs bolstered their team with the signing of Kabelo Mahlasela from Bloemfontein Celtic, Leonardo Castro from Mamelodi Sundowns and Siphelele Ntshangase from Baroka.

The reason Amakhosi only pursued offensive reinforcements is because Komphela feels they are defensively compact.

“Defensively we are one team that concedes less. We just need to convert the chances. From a defensive point of view we are okay,” Komphela said.

“The only problem with us has been taking our chances. Leo [Castro] will help us in getting the goals where possible. Ntshangase will help in the midfield, Mahlasela is a highly offensive player.”

Mahlasela though was unlucky after suffering a knee injury last week soon after signing, dealing Chiefs’ Premiership title ambitions a setback. The midfidler sustained the injury in his first training session last week.

Mahlasela together with Castro and Ntshangase are the team’s marquee signings in the January transfer window.

“Unfortunately he got injured first session with us and we are expecting results on Monday [today].

“But it looks like a long term injury for possibly three months,” Komphela bemoaned.

Amakhosi started their New Year timidly after their goalless draw with SuperSport United at the Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, where youth player Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya was the only debutant.
