Breaking Barriers in red-hot pursuit of Everlasting Love

Delpech the one to follow at Greyville

- By Racing Editor

Champion jockey Anthony Delpech sits on top of the national jockeys’ log, leading by an impressive 18 winners. You’re bound to make profit when following the veteran, and today should be no different, courtesy of the abundance of talented horses he’s booked to ride. Everlasting Love appears his best chance at a victory, they team up in Race 7, a FM 72 Handicap over 1600m on the Greyville Polytrack. This Robbie Hill-trained filly is still learning about racing, she over-raced in her latest effort over the course and distance when beaten 2.90 lengths into sixth place behind Komeshans Flight. She won her barrier trial on the Polytrack, so that last performance isn’t a true reflection of her ability. This daughter of Lawman is classy, she also overcame a wide draw on debut when a one-length winner in a 1400m contest. Everlasting Love has the most scope for improvement in this field plus, not only is she well drawn in stall gate 3, but she is also well in at the weights, shouldering just 56kg, a massive advantage considering that’s 3kg less than her biggest danger Shifting Gears. The combination of jockey Gunter Wrogemann and trainer Louis Goosen has been firing on all cylinders in KwaZulu-Natal. The Goosen-trained Shifting Gears has had three runs on the Polytrack for a third, a second and a win. She was unlucky last time when nabbed late over the course and distance and beaten 0.25-lengths into second place by Pearl Glow. For Trifectas float the two with Eden Gardens Glitz, Ideal Winter, Hey Georgie Girl, Moon Princess and Just One More. Breaking Barriers will attempt to redeem herself when she runs in Race 2, a fillies and mares Maiden Plate over 1400m. She was an 18-10 favourite last time, finishing a disappointing third behind Viva Le Bleu. She appears hard to beat today, and for all those who keep the faith, she is banker material in the BiPot. Not only does Denis Drier’s charge have the best form in this weak field, but she also tops the best-weighted column, so she’ll prove very hard to beat, get on!
