McCarthy gives blessings to his Wits-bound captain
Johannes joins the Clever Boys in July
Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy is impressed by the professionalism of his outgoing captain Robyn Johannes.
McCarthy feels the defender has been giving his best for the Mother City-based club despite signing a pre-contract with Bidvest Wits, a team they will meet in the first round of the Nedbank Cup sometime next month.
Johannes will be leaving City in July to link up with the struggling defending league champions.
“He is one of the best professionals you can have. I have been impressed by the way he has been conducting himself since signing that pre-contract with Wits.
“He leads the team as [the] captain and it will remain like that [until he leaves],’’ said McCarthy, speaking on the sidelines of the Nedbank Cup draw in Sandton on Monday.
“I was always in the loop [about Johannes’ negotiations with the club to renew his contract] because that’s the kind of relationship I have with my players.
“It was between Robyn and the club coming to terms. That was little bit out of my jurisdiction.’’
McCarthy, however, admitted that it was disappointing when the player confirmed he really was leaving.
“When I eventually found out the news, it was a bit disappointing because he has been one of the most outstanding players for us this season,’’ noted the rookie mentor.
The Citizens also lost striker Lehlohonolo Majoro to the Clever Boys last month.
