Maritzburg have chance to end SuperSport hoodoo
Form favours the home side but history doesn’t
Maritzburg United have never beaten SuperSport United at home in the league since their first season in the Premiership back in 2005 but tonight’s clash at Harry Gwala Stadium (7.30pm) could be their biggest chance.
The Team of Choice have rediscovered their form with two wins on the trot, while Matsatsantsa have gone eight league matches without a win (notching up four losses and four draws).
Maritzburg and SuperSport have met on 11 occasions in the league in the KwaZulu-Natal side’s back yard and Maritzburg have struggled to get a win.
Despite playing at home, they have lost five matches and there have been six draws.
Such has been SuperSport’s dominance they have won on their last four league visits.
Maritzburg’s coach Fadlu Davids is hoping his side will not be complacent after their convincing 4-0 win over Bloemfontein Celtic in their last match at Harry Gwala.
“It’s two-fold. Let’s hope we can use the confidence, but you have to be very wary because we started the season like this, with three wins in a row [before things fell apart],” he said.
“It’s two league wins in a row now and I have to keep the players grounded and keep them aware that this happened at the beginning of the season,” added Davids, who was a keen spectator at Princess Magogo Stadium when SuperSport United lost 1-0 to Golden Arrows at the weekend.
Davids’s counterpart Eric Tinkler has lamented SuperSport’s hectic schedule, but the reality is they are going through one of their poorest runs.
Tinkler, therefore, will have to find a way to start winning because he’s coming under increasing pressure.
