Ajax aim to finish season on top half of the PSL table

- By Gomolemo Motshwane

Ajax Cape Town head of football Mich d’Avary feels the capture of Ivorian striker Yannick Zakri will boost the team’s chances of a top-eight finish in the league.

The Urban Warriors have concluded the deal to sign Zakri, 26, from Mamelodi Sundowns after having his medical yesterday.

Ajax are 13th in the Premiership with 16 points – six adrift of Chippa United in eighth spot.

The former ASEC Mimosas man is the sixth player to join Ajax in the January transfer window after Samuel Julies, Fagrie Lakay, Gerald Takwara,

‘ ‘ He’s a quality player. The benefit is that he knows SA football

Muzi Thabotha and Tendai Ndoro.

The management has been particularly aggressive in the transfer market after their horrendous start to the season that pitted the team in the relegation scenario.

“We wanted the deal wrapped up quickly. He did his full medicals and the paperwor k has been done,” D’Avary told Sowetan.

“He is a quality player. The benefit is that he knows South African football.

“When you bring a foreigner it takes time to adapt.”

The Mother City outfit made a coup when they landed Zimbabwean striker Ndoro. Ajax caught many people by surprise after beating other PSL clubs to the signature of the exOrlando Pirates attacker.

D’Avary said the management was not done signing players in the window. “Ndoro wanted to come back and we were looking for a striker. He has a track record of scoring goals in the PSL.

“We have another couple that we are hoping to wrap by the end of the week.”

Meanwhile, Sundowns’ other import Fares Hachi will be loaned out to SuperSport United to ensure the Brazilians do not exceed the quota of five foreigners, it has emerged.
