PSL clears confusion over Chiefs, City clash

The Citizens’ involvement in CAF Confed Cup will force fixture change

The PSL has diffused what could have misled the fans regarding the Kaizer Chiefs versus Cape Town City fixture next month.

Chiefs yesterday announced a “date change” for the aforementioned Absa Premiership clash – only for City to flag them offside.

The game was initially pencilled in for February 21 at FNB Stadium, but it has turned out that it will be postponed due to City’s participation in the CAF Confederation Cup.

“Please note that the Chiefs vs. Cape Town City match scheduled for 21 February 2018 at FNB Stadium has been moved to 20 February 2018 at the same venue. Kick-off is still at 19h30,” Amakhosi tweeted yesterday.

City, however, were quick to remind Chiefs that the Mother City-based club will be hosting Young Buffaloes of Swaziland in their ConfedCup preliminary tie on the same weekend.

“This is impossible. Cape Town City is playing a CAF home leg fixture in Cape Town on February 20,” City noted.

PSL spokesman Lux September said: “Last week, we received communication from CAF informing us about the changes in the calendar. This has necessitated some changes. We are currently engaging different affected stakeholders,” September told Sowetan yesterday.

Apart from City, other SA representatives in the latest CAF interclub competitions are Mamelodi Sundowns, Bidvest Wits (Champions League) and SuperSport United (Confed Cup).

It is hoped that there won’t be any domestic fixture backlog in future following CAF’s decision to switch the dates of its interclub competitions from February-November to August-May.

Meanwhile, Chiefs also announced changes to match venue and kick-off time for their fixtures against Bloemfontein Celtic (January 24) and Mamelodi Sundowns (January 27), respectively.

The Celtic fixture has been moved from Moses Mabhida to FNB Stadium (8.15pm), while the Sundowns tie, also at FNB Stadium, will be at night (8.15pm) after being moved from a day time kick-off.
