William The Brave is Waiting For Rain

Fayd’Herbe the man to follow today

- By Racing Editor

Waiting For Rain got going too late after dropping out from a wide draw in the Peninsula Handicap (Grade 2) over 1800m this month, when he finished a 6.05-length eighth behind Eyes Wide Open.

On paper, trainer Piet Steyn’s charge appears hard to beat when he lines up in Race 2 at Kenilworth today, a MR 89 Divided Handicap over 1800m.

This son of Black Minnaloushe was drawn No 15 of 15 horses in the Peninsula Handicap and was more than 10 lengths behind the leader at the 400m mark, so that effort was full of merit. He had top-weight Stonehenge behind him in that race.

Waiting For Rain shoulders 58.5kg and faces a weak field.

Stonehenge will carry 1.5kg more than Steyn’s charge. He is better than his last outing suggests because apprentice Lyle Hewitson’s saddle slipped in running.

Bernard Fayd’Herbe takes the ride this time and Stonehenge’s chances are further enhanced by the fact he is dropping in class.

Sean Tarry’s charge is long overdue a sixth victory because he hasn’t won a race since November 2016 but is often thereabouts.

The pair could pay to take in a boxed Exacta. For Quartets float them with the field.

William The Brave is undefeated since blinkers were added to his equipment. He also seems best over 1800m.

This Silvano gelding is on the upgrade and could score a third consecutive victory when he runs in Race 5, a MR 70 Divided Handicap over 1800m.

He has won both his last two starts by 0.50 lengths and appears better than rated. The only chink in his armour appears to be No 9 draw in this nine-horse field.

Joey Ramsden’s charge went off at 19-1 last time out and although you are unlikely to receive that good a price today, he is worth a TAB Win bet.

Combine him with Visigoth for Swingers and Exactas. Visigoth shoulders 1kg less than William The Brave at 58kg and is drawn at No 7. However, he lacks nothing in the skills department and will be running on late.
