Modiba a hero for SuperSport

Defender’s strike arrests winless run

- By Sihle Ndebele

Aubrey Modiba’s 77th minute strike against Maritzburg United at Harry Gwala Stadium last night inspired SuperSport United to get back to winning ways, ending Matsatsantsa’s eight-game winless streak in the league.

Modiba’s fifth league goal also saw the Tshwane-based outfit recover well from the departure of star striker Jeremy Brockie who joined Mamelodi Sundowns this week.

Both teams were cautious throughout the first half, which resulted in the scarcity of goal-scoring opportunities.

Despite eventually winning the match, a Kingston Nkhatha-led SuperSport attack hardly troubled the Maritzburg defence, which remains the least conceding in the league so far this season.

It was only the 10th goal the KwaZulu-Natal side has conceded so far this season in the league.

The hosts kept the same starting line-up that humiliated Bloemfontein Celtic 4-0 last week. SuperSport made two changes from their 1-0 defeat to Golden Arrows last Saturday – Grant Kekana and Reneilwe Letsholonyane started ahead of Siyabonga Nhlapo and Teboho Mokoena.

The win for Eric Tinkler’s troops means Maritzburg have failed to beat SuperSport at home since 2005.

The Tshwane side will remain in KZN for their next fixture against AmaZulu at King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday, while Maritzburg travel to Free State Stars at Goble Park on the same day.
