Student leader ‘threatens to kill mayor’

Msimanga reveals chilling messages sent to him

- By Ngwako Modjadji ■

Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga has been labelled a white puppet by a leader of an ANC-linked student body.

Bokamoso Segole, chairman of SA Students Congress in Tshwane, also threatened to kill the mayor.

“I am not scared of Solly, he is a beauty king. He is a white puppet who takes a mandate from whites in the DA. We are coming for him on Friday [tomorrow]. He must go,” Segole told Sowetan yesterday.

This comes after Msimanga disclosed that he received death threats on his Facebook page allegedly from Segole.

The message read: “Solly, former Mamelodi beauty king, we are coming 4 you this Friday, bloody die white puppet.”

Msimanga said this sort of utterance was unacceptable and has since been deleted by the individual who originally posted it.

“I will monitor the comments made by this individual and others like him who elect to use these communications platforms to launch insults [and] threats instead of lodging genuine concerns about service delivery issues in the city.”

Segole said he was not going to withdraw the message he posted on Facebook.

Tomorrow’s march to the City of Tshwane, which will be led by the ANC Youth League, appeared to be at the centre of the political storm between Msimanga and leaders of the youth league.

League’s Tshwane regional chairman Lesego Makhubela said the march was in protest against the purging of black workers and the lack of service delivery in the city, among other things. But, Segole went as far as threatening to burn the entire city if their demands were not met. Msimanga said there was no place for violence in South Africa and it must be dealt with whenever it occurs.

“While we respect all South Africans’ constitutional right to protest, we encourage them to do so in a manner that is commensurate with the law.”

Makhubela accused Msimanga of political grandstanding by claiming he was receiving death threats. “He must open a case if he is receiving death threats. He is throwing tantrums to get sympathy.”

The league and Msimanga have been at loggerheads since the metro fell into the hands of the DA.
