Arrows can smell the title

Three contenders on the wings if Abafana Bes’thende falter in MDC’s final stretch

- By Sihle Ndebele

With only four games to spare in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC), leaders Lamontville Golden Arrows need only 10 more points to secure their second reserve league title.

Abafana Bes’thende won the 2015/16 edition. The Durban outfit coached by Vusumuzi Vilakazi are on 25 points, but just three ahead of Bloemfontein Celtic.

Accumulating 10 points will see Abafana Bes’thende finishing on 35 points, which will be unreachable.

Phunya Sele Sele’s title ambitions depend on Arrows’ slump. Given that last week the leaders suffered their second defeat when they were beaten 1-0 by bottom-placed Platinum Stars, Celtic can hope for a miracle.

Celtic can finish on 34 points if they record victories in all their four remaining matches.

If it happens that both Arrows and Celtic falter at the summit, Maritzburg United and Ajax Cape Town, who are third and fourth respectively, mathematically stand a chance.

The reigning Diski champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, are having a season to forget. The Brazilians are 11th, with only 13 points.

This weekend, for the first time since inception, the MDC games will be played in Limpopo’s Seshego Stadium.

Meanwhile, the Team of Choice have promoted two of their Diski stars, Ujaun McDonald and Lindokuhle Sithole, to the first team. Both players are aged 18.
