Top of table clash promises fireworks

Lakay warns City will bring A-game against Brazilians

- By Gomolemo Motshwane

Cape Town City winger Lyle Lakay feels his team save their best performances for Mamelodi Sundowns. Since their establishment in 2016, the Citizens have shown dazzling form against Sundowns, whom they have beaten in all their three league matches in the past two seasons. City did the double over the Tshwane club last season, with 2-1 and 1-0 wins, while in the first round of this season they also secured a 1-0 result in their favour. Lakay hopes City continue their impressive displays against the star-studded Chloorkop side at home at the Athlone Stadium tonight (8pm).

“There is always motivation when we play against Sundowns and we are always on top of our game against them,” Lakay said. “Without doubt Sun- downs have the best squad in the PSL and winning against them is always a big confidence booster.

“It’s also not just about us trying to prove something by beating them but it’s about the title race.

“At this stage with 11 games to go, we have also positioned ourselves to be in a position to clinch the league.”

City could reduce the gap to leaders Sundowns to just one point should they win the topof-the-table clash.

Lakay admits, though, that they will have their hands full trying to contain former teammate Aubrey Ngoma and company.

The Brazilians captured striker Jeremy Brockie from SuperSport United, Siyabonga Zulu from Platinum Stars, Gaston Sirino from Club Bolivar and sensational winger Ngoma from the Mother City club. Ngoma will face his former teammates for the first time at the Athlone Stadium.

“Aubrey is a top player who I learned a lot from during our time together at the club,” Lakay said. “In my opinion it was a big loss for us. He is a top player and I am not surprised they wanted him at all costs.

“He is one of the players who have so much composure inside the box and his finesse is just incredible.”
