Wits relish key role in title race

Hunt wary of rejuvenated Amakhosi

While Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt concedes that his team is out of the title race, he is relishing the prospect of playing the role of kingmaker.

The defending champions accept that they will relinquish the Absa Premiership title at the end of the season, but not before playing a hand in deciding where it goes.

The university club will play all the top contenders in this home stretch of the race in the coming weeks – starting with Kaizer Chiefs at the Bidvest Stadium tomorrow (6pm).

“What is for sure is that we will determine who wins the league because we get to play all of them [title contenders],” Hunt said cheekily.

“We can’t win the league, unless we win the 11 remaining games. So it looks like it will be won with less than 60 points at this stage.”

In the next few weeks the Students will play Cape Town City, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

While planning against Chiefs’ unique formation is enough to deal with, Hunt is also wary of the new dimension brought to the team by their signings.

Amakhosi have a fresh spring in their step this year after the team was replenished with the acquisition of Leonardo Castro and Siphelele Ntshangase.

“They have made a few signings, which has helped them in their structure,” Hunt observed.

“Chiefs play differently to most teams in the league. This thing of them parking the bus is rubbish. When they go forward, they go forward in numbers.”

Wits have found good form of late, having won three of their last four games.
