Wits, City to test each other ahead of their African safari
Midweek game will be a workout
Bidvest Wits and Cape Town City will ensure they are battle tested before starting their journeys in African competition.
The two teams will meet for the third time in cup competition this season in the Nedbank Cup last 32 at the Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday (7.30 pm). They earlier met over two legs in the MTN8 semifinal, where the Citizens emerged victorious.
This time around the teams will use their cup tie as preparation as City go into the CAF Confederation Cup while Wits compete in the Champions League.
The Mother City club will take on Young Buffaloes from Swaziland in the first leg of their preliminary round at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday.
The Students will face Pamplemousses FC from Mauri- tius in the first leg of the preliminary round at the Bidvest Stadium also on Saturday.
Wits held title chasers Kaizer Chiefs to a 1-1 draw after goals from Ryan Moon and Lehlohonolo Majoro.
Bidvest coach Gavin Hunt says his team must take their chances in front of goal against City after missing numerous chances against Chiefs.
“That’s why we are where we are. We can’t miss the chances that we miss and expect to win games,” Hunt lamented.
The PSL Coach of the Season said his team welcomed the frequent matches in order to overcome their slump.
“We are in a good mental space. Even when you are losing you want to play, so let’s play and see.”
After signing Majoro from City in the January transfer window, the club was hoping he would boost their scoring ratio but it wasn’t to be.
Hunt hopes Majoro will score again after bagging his first against Chiefs.
“He has played five games without scoring. He is working for the team but he needs to start scoring. But he is working hard.”
