Rusike header sees City beat Clever Boys yet again

Debutant sends Cape side into last 16

Cape Town City continued their dominance over Bidvest Wits with a 1-0 win courtesy of a Matthew Rusike debut goal to advance to the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup last night.

The Zimbabwean striker grabbed a second-minute headed goal after an assist from Teko Modise to advance the Mother City club to the next stage of the R7-million first prize tournament. It was the fourth time this season City beat the Clever Boys.

With their city, Cape Town, experiencing a severe drought, a heavy downpour came down at Milpark, Johannesburg.

But, they were hoping that they would make it rain goals on their opposition and they got off to perfect start with the early goal.

Three years after leaving Kaizer Chiefs, Rusike made a return to the PSL after signing with City last week.

With captain Robyn Johannes on suspension and also headed to Wits next season, Benni McCarthy tried a new combination of Tshepo Gumede and Kwanda Mngonyama in central defence.

For the home side, the strike combination of James Keene and Lehlohonolo Majoro proved unfruitful and they had to change tactics in the second half. Winger Gabadinho Mhango replaced Majoro to inject some pace into their monotonous attack.

Hunt also threw in their January signing Thobani Mncwango for his first significant minutes after having made an injury-time substitution in his debut against SuperSport United. But Mncwango’s contribution was limited as City did not sit back to just defend their lead.

Elsewhere last night, AmaZulu beat Mthatha Bucks 3-0 on penalties at King Zwelithini Stadium after the teams had deadlocked 2-2 after extra time, while Polokwane City were stunned 3-2 by NFD side Ubuntu FC, also in extra time.
