Constable Fanyana Makhubu was ambushed on Tuesday night at an Engen garage in Springs while a robbery was in progress. The 50-year-old’s murder has left his children shattered.

His older brother Sakhele Makhubu yesterday said: “He was everything to them. His daughter … is finding it hard to come to terms with the death, but his son seems to be accepting the reality … but he is obviously hurting as well.”

The family was receiving support and counselling from the EMPD.

“He was a peacekeeper and would intervene if people were fighting.

He wouldn’t even harm a rat. They didn’t even give him a chance. He was on night shift and had just parked the car.”

Police said yesterday two men, aged 30 and 35, were arrested in connection with the murder and are due to appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court today.

The pair are said to be a part of a gang that bombed a drop safe, stealing an undisclosed amount of money, and robbing the Engen garage of cigarettes.
