Arrows aim to avenge senior side humiliation

Pirates stand between MDC leaders and title

- By Sihle Ndebele

In the Absa Premiership, the last game of the season between Orlando Pirates and Golden Arrows can renew some nostalgic feelings for the Buccaneers’ faithful, having beaten Abafana Bes’thende twice – in the 2010/11 and the following season – to be the back-to-back league champions.

However, in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge’s (MDC’s) penultimate fixture, Arrows’ reserves are prepared to record a new memory against Pirates in the closing stages of the season. They need to beat the Soweto giants to be crowned Diski champions for the second time after winning it two years ago.

Heading into the Sunday game at Makhulong Stadium, Arrows MDC assistant coach Papi Zothwane admitted that it would be nice to win the trophy against Pirates because the Buccaneers’ senior side has also done that when they beat their senior side.

“Their senior team has previously won the league twice by beating us, so it will also be nice to win this Diski title by beating them. It will not be an easy match but we know what’s at stake,” Zothwane said.

Abafana Bes’thende are on top of the MDC table with 29 points after 13 matches, with only two fixtures to spare. If they fail to beat Pirates, Arrows will have to beat Wits in their last game next week.

A draw will also not be enough for them to be ordained champions because secondplace Bloemfontein Celtic can still reach 31 points if they win their last two matches.

MDC Fixtures (All at Makhulong Stadium unless stated) Tomorrow: AmaZulu v Maritzburg (10am); Chiefs v Plat Stars (12pm).

Sunday: Wits v Ajax, Sturrock Park (10am); CPT City v Celtic, Parow Park (10am); FS Stars v Sundowns (10am); Arrows v Pirates (12pm); Baroka v Chippa, Old Peter Mokaba (12pm)
