Erasmus focused on relegation

Golden Boot prize last thing on striker’s mind

- By Sihle Ndebele

Having already scored 10 goals to be joint National First Division (NFD) top-scorer, Mthatha Bucks striker Mpho Erasmus feels it would be selfish of him to think about the Golden Boot prize while his team is fighting relegation.

Erasmus, alongside Royal Eagles’ Modibedi Mokoena and Nkosingiphile Phewa, have all netted double figures, making it even harder to predict who will walk away with the top-scorer’s gong at the end of the season.

Bucks are second from the bottom of the log. “My main focus is to assist the team move away from relegation zone. I just need to score more goals to make sure that we survive relegation,” Erasmus said.

The Eastern Cape-based side were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup by Premiership side AmaZulu on penalties last week. Erasmus admits that their cup elimination gives them enough time to focus more on their league woes.

“We were not angry to lose against AmaZulu. We gave our all in that match but we were unlucky. We will now focus fully on our league situation. Crashing out [of the Cup] was a blessing in disguise,” stated the Bucks striker.

Bucks welcome University of Pretoria tomorrow to Mthatha Stadium tomorrow.

“This game will be like a cup final. We must stamp our authority because we cannot afford to drop more points, especially at home.”
