Benni not giving up on his league title dream

City plan to give big boys run for money

Cape Town City will not be throwing in the towel in the league race despite being seven points behind the leaders with nine matches to go, says head coach Benni McCarthy.

The Citizens were beaten 1-0 by Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium on Saturday night but, in his own words, Bafana Bafana’s leading scorer of all time said he hoped they are still in the mix.

“It’s nine games to go and all is not lost. If you wanna win the league, you’ve got to beat those teams around you so, from now on, the nine games left depend on us,” McCarthy said.

“If we win all our nine games, the way the league is structured now, everybody can beat everybody.”

The 40-year-old would like to see the league title race go down to the wire and expects a tough run-in for every team, including the leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

He did, however, acknowledge that the so-called big three simply have enough quality to push the likes of City aside.

“For a team like Cape Town City, we are newly formed and it’s our second year, so for us to be able to go all the way and really give the big boys a run for their money, I think I have to give credit to my players and applaud them for trying.

“But, sometimes, when you don’t have the quality of the likes of Sundowns, Chiefs and [Orlando] Pirates, you are going to come second best as much as you think you’ve got everything worked out.

“They do possess biggername players than you have and most of the time come out victorious and against Chiefs, it was one of those cases,” McCarthy said.

City will be at home against Bidvest Wits in their next match, which will be played at Athlone Stadium on Saturday.
