Peter believes Majestic Mambo can win

Take him with Folk Dance in a Guineas Day stable double

Majestic Mambo is top-class material and, following three exceptional victories over 1800m, the three-yearold is hard to oppose in Saturday’s Gauteng Guineas (Grade 2) over 1600m.

“I’m not worried about the wide No 11 draw to be honest,” said trainer Paul Peter yesterday.

“He can come from off them and he’s proven he has a good turn of foot. The only thing I’m worried about is the trip. It could be a bit short for him. He is looking to go further,” he added.

The three-year-old colt is unbeaten and has made a mockery of the opposition in all three of his starts. In fact, he overcame the widest draw of all in his latest effort when defeating Mike de Kock-trained Royal Crusade by 2.25 lengths.

“I hope he stays unbeaten. His preparation has gone extremely well. He is sound, and he has coped with the training well.

“I’ve done all I can do to get him ready to win this race – now I leave it to him and God,” said a confident Peter.

The trainer has no doubt Majestic Mambo can win all three legs of the Triple Crown, which kicks off with Saturday’s Guineas.

But this first leg will be his toughest task.

“He will be strongest over 1800m and further. I believe he will even stay 2400m. If he wins the Guineas I’ll be confident he can win the Triple Crown.”

Commenting on Saturday’s opposition, he laughed: “I’m scared of all these runners. Not because my colt has no ability, but only because the trip could be short.”

Anthony Delpech rides Mary Slackowned Monks Hood in the Guineas and Gunter Wrogemann is aboard Majestic Mambo. But Peter said Delpech will be given the chance to ride Majestic Mambo in the Classic and the Derby – legs two and three of the Triple Crown – as Wrogemann is committed to partner Seerite in those races.

Peter will also saddle Alssakhra in the Guineas and hopes the Seventh Rock colt will run in the minor-money placings.

Peter also trains the ruling favourite for the Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas (Grade 2), Folk Dance.

“God’s been good to me this year,” said Peter. “I’m on edge, I won’t lie. But I’m hoping for the best.”

Folk Dance is the class horse of the race and the trainer is upbeat about her chances.

“She is extremely well, fit and sound. She’s a good horse, but will have the draw to beat. Gavin Lerena worked her and was happy this week – she should be right there.”
