Davids sings praises of his key players

Xulu, Ndlovu proving key to Maritzburg’s fortunes

Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids has attributed their Nedbank Cup second-round victory over Royal Eagles to his charges’ mental strength.

Despite being reduced to 10 men late in the first half after captain Bevan Fransman was sent off, Maritzburg managed to record a 2-1 win over the NFD side, claiming the Pietermaritzburg bragging rights.

Deolin Mekoa and Siyanda Xulu were on target to send the Team of Choice to the last eight of the competition.

“I know we have younger players but in this match we were the men and they were the boys. Today my players showed strength in their thinking. No disrespect to Royal Eagles, but it was men against boys,” Davids said.

“Even with 10 men… we showed real character.”

Xulu’s 89th minute winner was his third goal this season in 27 matches across all competitions. Davids has described the rejuvenated ex-Kaizer Chiefs centre-back as a “warrior”.

“He is a leader and a warrior. You can put him in the frontline of your war.

He also brings leadership to the younger players. We have this impressive record [of having conceded 14 goals; the least in 23 league matches]… yes he’s part of it but it’s because of the whole team.”

The icing on the cake for Maritzburg was Siphesihle Ndlovu winning yet another Man of the Match accolade, prompting Davids to say he does not see the 21-year-old failing to grab the Young Player of the Season gong.

“I do not see anybody challenging him [for the award]. He’s destined for greatness.”
