Arrows working on hitting the bulls-eye

TEAM HAS WORKED HARD ON SCORING GOALS DURING BREAK

- By Mark Gleeson

Clinton Larsen has relished the time off from Absa Premiership action over the last weeks to refresh his Golden Arrows side and try to sort out the scoring problem that has bedevilled his team all season.

“You get at this stage of the season what is called cumulative fatigue, so we’ve given the guys some rest, but we’ve also come back and trained very hard to be ready for the next game,” said Larsen, whose side are lurking ominously just above the relegation standings.

Arrows sit with two other clubs on 27 points, just three above second-from-bottom Ajax Cape Town.

They were beaten by Orlando Pirates in their last match at home on 17 March and are next away against Cape Town City on 4 April.

Arrows’ 27 goals in the league this season puts them among the better scoring teams but Larsen has been working on improving their finishing.

“We’ve said it from early on in the season that our final-third approach play leaves a lot to be desired. We get there consistently, through our break and counter attacks, but the final pass always seems to let us down,” the Arrows coach explained.

“When we do get a shot in, it is usually straight down the middle and the composure is sometimes lacking in the final third. We know in certain areas we lack some of the quality that the other teams have and that’s why we rely heavily on a strong fighting spirit in the group. And I think we’ve got that at Golden Arrows.

“I sound like a scratched record but if we keep fighting the way we do, we’ve got a big chance of finishing in a respectable position,” Larsen insisted.

Last season Arrows finished in eighth place and the coach hopes that will be, at minimum, the case.
