There was rejoicing at Regina Mundi Catholic Church in Rockville, Soweto, yesterday when 20 schools each received R150 000 as a donation from the Motsepe Foundation.

Mining magnate Patrice Motsepe and his wife, Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe, donated more than R8.5-million to local schools and churches.

Motsepe said his family was ploughing back to the community because of the love and support they receive from South Africans.

“That is why we try to give back to our communities so as to better the lives of our people,” he said. “Schools are our future and we are proud of our little boys and girls. Everyday when you go to class [know that] what you are studying [helps to shape] your future.”

Among the recipients of the donation were the schools that excelled academically, one with the highest enrolment as well as the top-performing schools in sport and music.

Many schools said they would use the money to revamp science and computer laboratories. Letsibogo Girls High School principal Ellen Mathopo said: “Our labs are not in a good condition. This donation will help us to improve the education of our children.”

Mokgome Secondary principal Maloke Mphahlele said the money would be used to upgrade the library and the school’s computer lab.

Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, who attended the hand-over of donations, said: “We are grateful for what the Motsepe family have done.”
