Trevor launches foundation with education focus

- By Chrizelda Kekana

Trevor Noah snuck into the country to launch his foundation yesterday.

Compered by radio and TV host Anele Mdoda, panel discussions were facilitated by Noah at New Nation School in Johannesburg. Some of the panelists were Brad Smith, president of Microsoft Corporation; Uzo Agyare-Kumi, dean emeritus at African Leadership Academy; Sello Hatang, CEO of Nelson Mandela Foundation; Khanyisile Motsa, founder and executive director of Home of Hope; and Gugulethu Ndebele, CEO of Save the Children SA.

Noah’s foundation has partnered with Microsoft for the benefit of education projects they will embark on. Former pupils of the school shared their stories of against the odds.

Introducing his foundation, Noah said he hoped for a sustainable change to improve the lives of vulnerable SA youth.

“There will be many questions and I am excited for that. The most important thing for me today is just to start that conversation and … journey of connecting those people who know more than I do … and connecting these voices.

“I’m a victim of one thing and that is if I want to get something done‚ I get a wom- an who’s more powerful than me to do it.”

He said they will focus on figuring out how to bridge the gap between a child and the education they deserve.

Noah insisted his foundation wasn’t trying to help out like a charity‚ but instead aimed to help those already trying to help themselves. “One thing I always loved about South Africa was that when my car was stuck ... well not my car‚ my mom’s car. My cars don’t get stuck. People would come and help us push the car. They didn’t push the car for us or fix the car for us‚ but they would help us push.”

Important thing is to start journey
