Mayengani out to fill Giyani Stadium

Tsonga music star takes a leaf out of Cassper’s book

Popular Tsonga music maestro Benny Mayengani is set to make history and follow in the footsteps of rapper Cassper Nyovest by filling up one of the biggest stadiums in Limpopo.

In a move never attempted before by a Limpopo artist, Mayengani is set to emulate Nyovest, who packed The Dome in Johannesburg, by filling up Giyani Stadium, whose sitting capacity is stated to be 20 000.

The musician is a giant in his own right and has earned himself the nickname The President from his legion of fans. He is confident he will become the first traditional artist to gather the largest crowd, come September.

“After Cassper Nyovest filled up The Dome I felt like it was possible for me to do this as well. Giyani is where most of my fan base is and the majority of them always attend events,” he said.

Mayengani hopes to join Nyovest, whose real name is Refiloe Phoolo, and gospel artist Dr Tumi who filled up The Dome during the live recording of his The Gathering of Worshippers DVD last year in the league of local black artists who have sold out big venues.

“I have die-hard fans and that gives me confidence to say I can do this. My fans always want to prove that we support our artists and even those who don’t like me will come to check how full it is, and at the end of the day this will be part of filling up the stadium,” Mayengani said.

The Maphalle hitmaker said his show – which is an allnighter – will feature supporting acts. The lineup will be released in due course.

The popular singer said he has his eyes set on Orlando Stadium next.

“My fans are excited. They can’t wait to buy tickets. I am confident that Giyani Stadium is going to be packed like never before, not even how it gets packed during soccer matches. Anything is possible and the thing that works a lot is black power. We will be showing that we are united and we are talented,” he said. “After filling up Giyani Stadium I want to go to Orlando. I will be the first traditional artist to fill up the stadium and the whole country must come support so we can show that traditional music is still relevant in our country.” Mayengani said fans will be treated to hits from past albums and his latest work, Tintoma, which was released last week.
