Female cop shot dead at her gate
Inspector Zulu robbed of her service firearm
A female Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer was shot dead as she drove out of her home in Palm Springs, south of Johannesburg, yesterday.
Inspector Ayanda Zulu, 39, who worked at Region D in Soweto, was allegedly attacked by two men as she exited her home at about 5.20am. They fled with her 9mm service firearm.
Metro police spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said Zulu was on her way to work when the incident occurred.
“She pulled her patrol car out of her yard and was about to close the gate when eyewitnesses saw two male suspects attack her. They robbed her of her service pistol and shot her twice in the chest and in the chin,” Minnaar said.
Zulu is survived by her husband and four children Ayanda, Junior, Lethabo and Naledi.
Gauteng MEC for community safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane said they lost a selfless and dedicated officer, adding she was shocked by the incident.
“Her passing would not weaken the morale of our police force, but encourage them to do even more to continue to protect and serve our communities.”
In the last seven months, 12 metro officers have died in Gauteng. Five were killed in February.
“This must stop. Before we know it we will be left with no one to protect the good citizens of this country,” the MEC said.
Nkosi-Malobane appealed for a harsh sentence for the perpetrators.
“This will send a strong message to the would-be perpetrators that such atrocities cannot be tolerated in our country.
“On behalf of the Gauteng provincial government I would like to send our heartfelt condolences to the Zulu family, friends and the fellow JMPD members.”
Gauteng police spokesman Captain Kay Makhubele said they were investigating a case of murder and robbery.
