Celebs in dress awkwardness

- By Karabo Disetlhe-Mtshayelo

Have you ever looked at old pictures of yourself and thought: “What on earth was I wearing?”

Well, so do our celebrities. Everyone makes fashion blunders and we can all count ourselves lucky that we do not make them in front of the world’s glare like some of our celebrities.

Who can forget the swan dress that singer Bjork wore to the 2001 Academy Awards that became the butt of red carpet jokes?

Also, remember when Boity Thulo almost broke social media [convention] when she was accused of wearing a vagina revealing dress at 2016 Sama awards? Indeed, hindsight is the best teacher.

So we asked some of our favourite celebs to reflect in hindsight and tell us some of the things they would never wear again.

We started with Thulo herself, who did not discuss the alleged vagina dress, but instead says that the two pieces of clothing she would never wear again are the “V denim skirts and tops”. These were a huge trend in the past and Thulo says although fashion is constantly recycling items from the past and making them relevant again, she would never wear them again.

“At the time it was a really cool trend. I owned a pair, and looking back on it now, it just didn’t look right. So I definitely will not be wearing a V-shaped skirt anytime soon. No thank you,” she says. Diski Diva Thandi “Blue” Mbombo also reflected on past trends, but says that she made the mistake of trying “to rock it” recently with disastrous consequences.

“Remember that trend of wearing long white socks with your sneakers and looking really cool? Well there was a nice “chillas” that I was invited to, and decided to wear my hot pants, long white socks and sneakers, just for that casual, chilled look.

“Everyone looked at me like I was crazy. It was so embarrassing. So I have since bid the long white socks goodbye and will never wear them again.”

Actor and musician Nick Nkuna is another celeb who is not a fan of white stuff, and in his case, it is white pants.

He says that he made the blunder of buying them but thankfully did not put them on.

“I wonder why I even bought them in the first place. I actually ended giving them away. It’s quite hard to make white pants work, unless you’re off to an event that has an all white theme. So that’s me, I will never wear white pants.”

Presenter Pearl Modiadie’s fashion regret got to be broadcast all over social media in 2015, when she says that some people called her trashy for wearing it.

In fact, if you googled her name, the infamous dress usually shows up in the suggested feeds.

This was the maroon dress she wore at the Metro FM Awards in

2015. She says that at the time she wanted to take a bit of a fashion risk, but looking back, it was a complete flop. “I would never put that dress on again. I think the designer went a bit overboard, because I remember my brief being to be more risque and fashion forward. But when I put it on, it just didn't work. I felt so uncomfortable.” Modiadie says that social media had a field day, with some people applauding her bold move, while some said she was trashy.

“I was interviewing the winners backstage, and I remember the director having to work around the dress because they couldn’t broadcast my cut-outs on television. That dress is definitely my worst fashion mistake. Never again!”
