Fight for last play-off spot

Leopards, Kings, Spurs have chance

- By Daniel Mothowagae

With Jomo Cosmos having already secured a promotional play-off berth at the weekend, it is now left to three sides to fight for the remaining spot in a bid for Premiership promotion.

Black Leopards, Real Kings and Witbank Spurs all stand a chance to join Cosmos in the play-offs provided each win their remaining fixture and hope other results go their way on the final day of the NFD on Sunday.

Leopards will host Cosmos in a must-win encounter for Lidoda Duvha at Thohoyandou Stadium to be sure of a place in the sought-after playoffs that kick-off on May 16.

The Limpopo giants went as far as the same stage in the 2016/17 edition but lost out to provincial rivals Baroka, who moved up the ranks.

Jomo Sono’s side on the hand are already planning on how to return to the PSL two years after their relegation in the 2015/16 season.

A defeat for Cosmos on Sunday means they can only drop to third as wins for Kings and Spurs will matter little since the two can only finish on 48 points. Kings will host Cape Town All Stars while Spurs have a date with Royal Eagles at Harry Gwala.

At the bottom of the table, Ubuntu Cape Town must beat Tshakhuma at Athlone Stadium on Sunday to survive relegation. Super Eagles, who gained promotion to the NFD at the start of the season, are also not safe as defeat to Mthatha Bucks and a win for Ubuntu will see the Free State side demoted.

KwaZulu-Natal sides Richards Bay and Uthongathi also have one last chance to rescue their NFD status.
