Manana to face the music again
Helper lays charges against ANC MP
Member of parliament and convicted woman beater Mduduzi Manana faces fresh accusations of assault after he allegedly tried to push his domestic worker down the stairs of his double-storey Fourways home yesterday.
The woman, Christine Wiro, quit her job yesterday. She had started the job just three weeks before.
She laid the criminal charges, which also included crimen injuria and intimidation, against the former deputy minister of higher education at the Douglasdale police station, northern Johannesburg, last night.
In September Manana pleaded guilty to assaulting three women and escaped jail as he opted to pay a fine.
He was also ordered to attend an anger management programme and declared unfit to carry a firearm.
Wiro, 43, a Zimbabwean, said working for Manana was characterised by long hours and verbal abuse for the slightest mistake.
In her statement to police, which Sowetan has seen, she said trouble began when she mistakenly opened Manana’s gate for a wrong person yesterday thinking it was a guest he was expecting.
This led to Manana allegedly hurling insults, pushing her and threatening to deport her back to Zimbabwe.
Wiro’s son, Adonia Langa, 23, said his mother had considered quitting as early as her second day on the job.
“She just wanted to hang on so that she finishes one month and leave after getting her pay,” Langa said.
Manana could not be reached for comment as his phone was switched off and he had not responded to text messages by deadline.
Police spokeswoman Brigadier Mathapelo Peters confirmed the police were investigating a common assault case opened yesterday.
“We’re however not at liberty to disclose or confirm the identity of either the accused or the complainant, pending the court processes,” said Peters.
