Kwaito princes reunite

New track after 18-year wait

- By Julia Madibogo

Before there was Distruction Boyz, Big Nuz, T’zozo and Professor there was Msawawa and Mzambiya.

Dust up you All-Stars and adjust your bucket hats because the bad boys of kwaito are back with another collaboration. Almost 20 years since they released their first song together Wawungakanani, the original princes of kwaito have made a comeback with single titled Imoto kaShukela and they say it’s going to be a hit.

It feels just like yesterday when I first heard their first song as I walk towards them waiting patiently in our reception area. The office almost came to a standstill when people recognised them and stopped them for hugs.

Msawawa and Mzambiya, whose real names are Sboniso Dhlamini and Nkosinathi Zwane, have not really changed much. They look more alike now and they are almost the same height.

The conversation flows easily and you would not think they have not worked together for 18 years as the chemistry is there. “It’s been almost 20 years since we did our first song in 2000 … we are doing a reunion” Msawawa says.

“I think it’s all God’s timing. I think that is what took us so long. It has always been at the back of our minds that one day we will meet and do a track together or an album.

The past 18 years have been filled with up and downs for the pair. A marriage was in the bag for Msawawa before he called it off, he opened a booming drinking spot in Clermont, Durban, and has been rumoured to be broke a couple of times which he has denied.

Mzambiya took some time out to focus on himself as a person and he says he did a lot of self-introspection.

Their new single folows the gqom genre. Mzambiya says they would like to complete the kwaito childstar trio comeback by working with Mshoza.
