Tau, Ndlovu vie for pot of gold

- By Gomolemo Motshwane

Nearly R1.5-million in prize money will be dished out at the PSL Awards at the Sandton Convention Centre tonight (7.45pm).

The best-performing footballers in the country will be rewarded at the glitzy postseason shindig in Johannesburg.

Mamelodi Sundowns star Percy Tau is expected to play a starring role with three nominations, while Maritzburg United prodigy Siphesihle Ndlovu has five.

Tau stands to take home R412500 if he wins the PSL Footballer of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season on top of what he will get for finishing as the league’s joint top goalscorer.

Ndlovu could also be smiling all the way to the bank with a whopping R500 000 if he wins the Footballer of the Season, Players’ Player of the Season, Young Player of the Season, Midfielder of the Season and Nedbank Most Promising Young Player. After a stellar first campaign with Maritzburg, Siyanda Xulu will battle teammate Bevan Fransman and Orlando Pirates’ Innocent Maela for the Defender of the Season honours.

Xulu is especially proud after redeeming himself at the Team of Choice.

“It’s a wonderful feeling to be recognised for a good season, especially for me after what I have been through,” said Xulu, who was yesterday handed the captaincy of Bafana Bafana’s Cosafa Cup side. “As a team we had a wonderful season and for myself as a player it shows that I can still contribute and have a lot to offer.

“For me and Bevan to get nominated in one category means we have done well and that alone is an achievement.”
