Pitso erred by signing ‘has-been’ Jali

-

I am not sure about the exact value that a coach brings to a football team. Of course, choice of players and substitutions are his prerogative.

But Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane’s genius is not obvious to me. It just puzzles me what value he brings to the team with his choice of the likes of Oupa Manyisa, George Lebese and now Andile Jali.

Players who are at the end of their careers go somewhere to help struggling clubs to avoid relegation or go to China or the US – countries that are trying to build their leagues.

We have been playing football since time immemorial and do not need our top clubs recruiting “has-been” players. Top clubs need young, up-and-coming players like Percy Tau, for example.

Our football in general needs young players. At the same time these young players must not be recruited to come and warm the bench at a club until they wilt. They need maximum playtime and exposure.

My observation is that players are bought because there is money to buy them, not to strengthen the team. The overall effect is that our football as a country is going nowhere.
