Mahlambi on life in Egypt
Bafana Bafana starlet Phakamani “Phaks” Mahlambi, 20, is currently in the country enjoying the off-season hiatus with his family in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal. Sihle Ndebele caught up with the Al Ahly attacking-midfielder about life in Egypt
How is Egypt when you compare it with SA?
Egypt is more or less like SA. The food and clothing shops are the same. The difference is that they speak Arabic and at times they are reluctant to communicate in English. I am learning their language now and I slightly understand it.
How do you spend your spare time in Egypt?
I am staying at a hotel and I am always indoors. Most of the time I keep myself busy by watching the previous games we had played to prepare for the next one.
How often do you visit South Africa?
I come back once a year but my baby and girlfriend visit me now and then.
My girlfriend is studying at the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) and during holidays she and Sinakho [his baby girl] come to see me. I’m currently at home and it’s my first visit this year.
How do you make sure that you stay humble?
The most important thing is to always remember your background.
Playing for Al Ahly does not mean I should change how I live.
I think the way my parents taught me is what makes me to stay humble. I always make sure that I take advices from the right people.
Who is your best friend in the Al Ahly team?
I am close to all my teammates. I am enjoying everybody’s company.
What are your ambitions in football?
My ultimate dream is to play in Europe, and I am positive that it’ll happen in future.
