Stylist splits hairs over payment

Media house says Banza only wanted publicity

A Johannesburg hairstylist has accused the newly established channel Moja Love of owing him money.

Abdul Banza, who claimed he styled presenters on the talk show Show Me Love, said media company Siyaya TV (which produces Moja Love) has refused to pay the R42 000 due to him.

“At first they told me they did not have money and they were going to pay me at the end of March,” Banza said.

“When March came, they told me that the R42 000 was too much. They forgot that I used my products and my time to style their presenters.”

He said their agreement was that he would come in to style the presenters, and charge them R800 per person plus R1 000 for making the trip.

“Our agreement was they would pay me for styling, not plaiting or hair extensions. They ended up keeping me there for long hours and putting pressure on me,” he said.

Head of marketing at Siyaya TV, Lindiwe Mbonambi, disputed Banza’s version of events and insisted the channel had a trade exchange agreement with him.

She said they did not promise the hairstylist money because he wanted to grow his brand, they only offered him the platform.

“When he came to us, he said he wanted to open a salon at the new Sandton Mall. He wanted to grow the brand.

“We offered to supply him with hair products and extensions to style our presenters. Plus he wanted to take pictures and post them on Facebook to get more clientele.”

Mbonambi said at some point they offered him R600 for transport. She said they were shocked when Banza wanted to be paid in cash.

“He worked for us for only two weeks. It was only three days where he knocked off late, due to technical glitches.”

Banza confirmed getting money for petrol, but not for his services. “They are lying when they say they gave me products. I used my own products, equipment, dye, spray and conditioners.

“They further lied when they said our agreement was a trade-exchange agreement.”
