Downs ready to take Rantie

- By Tiyani wa ka Mabasa

Tokelo Rantie’s career could be rescued by Mamelodi Sundowns, Sowetan has learnt.

Rantie, 27, last played in October when he turned out for Turkish Süper Lig side Genclerbirligi in their 2-1 win over Besiktas. He played just six games in the 2017/18 campaign. His handlers, Q Evolution GFC, then denied reports that Rantie had absconded from Genclerbirligi and claimed the two parties had terminated their contract by mutual agreement.

Sowetan can confirm that Rantie has been in his home-town Parys, in Free State, over the past few months.

But according to our sources, there’s a good chance that the player could end up at Sundowns next season.

“Sundowns are definitely interested and that would be a good option for him. Even if he goes back to [Orlando] Pirates or joins [Kaizer] Chiefs, those could be good options, but for now he’s [back] home. He’s been there for sometime,” said our source yesterday.

The player’s representative Nadeem Mahmood was not available for comment because he’s in Portugal.

Denis Celebic of Q Evolution GFC had also not responded to our inquiry at the time of going to print.

Rantie’s career faces ruin after months of inactivity, but the Brazilians, we are told, are planning a swoop which would see him return to the PSL. He played for Pirates on loan from Swedish side IFK Hassleholm in the 2011/12 season, helping them to the league title with seven goals in seven starts.
