SuperSport step up search for coach

Caretaker Tembo tipped to stay on

SuperSport United’s search for a full-time coach will gain momentum when their board of directors meets in the coming week.

Sowetan has established that while Orlando Pirates assistant coach Rhulani Mokwena was mentioned as a potential candidate, he was not formally approached.

Caretaker coach Kaitano Tembo may not be the favourite for a permanent post, but sources from the club say he’s got a good chance of landing the job on a full-time basis.

Tembo, who’s been with the club for 19 years dating back to his playing days, took over when Eric Tinkler resigned in March.

Club chief executive Stan Matthews confirmed recently that Tembo will be considered for the hot seat.

SuperSport communication director David ‘Mazolman’ Skosana said yesterday that they are not desperate in their search. They resume pre-season training on June 21.

He noted, however, that SuperSport didn’t do as badly last season as people make out, despite fighting relegation.

“If you look at it, we played the [CAF] Confederation Cup final and how many teams have done that? We also won the MTN8, but we didn’t fare well in the league,” Skosana said.

“Holistically, I think we did well and we are being harsh on ourselves. We’ve never been out of the top eight in about 17 years, so fighting relegation was a message for us that we are not invincible. Hopefully we will be better in the new season.”

The Tshwane side have also been linked with Benni McCarthy and Luc Eymael, the Cape Town City and Free State Stars mentors respectively, but Tembo looks likely to get the nod to continue in the new season.
