Basetsana and Romeo Kumalo have opened a case of crimen injuria against an author who started a rumour that Romeo appeared in a gay sex tape with a male hip-hop artist.

The case was opened on Saturday at Midrand police station, Basetsana confirmed to Sowetan yesterday.

In a statement released on Saturday, the couple indicated they would further apply for protection orders against those responsible. “We feel it is our duty to take a stand against the individuals involved in spreading these baseless allegations.

“It is also our duty to act against all those keyboard warriors who so swiftly jump on the bandwagon to share harmful content about others without considering the longterm harm this can cause,” the couple’s statement read.

The Kumalos, who have been quiet about the allegations, broke their silence and distanced themselves from the rumours. They further stated that the rumours have caused serious emotional harm to their children.

“Our marriage and personal lives have been the subject of vicious social media attacks over the past week,” the statement read.

“The harm caused on a personal, emotional and professional level has been immeasurable. Moreover, the malicious spreading of fictitious rumours has caused enormous emotional harm to our children, who we have always tried to keep out of the public spotlight.”
