Senegalese World Cup fans set example of how to clean after ourselves

-

A video of Senegalese fans cleaning the stadium after their country’s victory over Poland at the on-going World Cup has gone viral. As a result, they have drawn lots of praise.

Japanese football fans are also known to clean up the stadiums after watching games. After watching Senegal fans, I was one proud African.

In a world where people thrive in littering and polluting the environment, it’s heart-warming to see people who still care about the environment.

We have problems here in South Africa of people who say stupid things like “if we don’t litter, people who clean the streets won’t have jobs”.

In other words, are they saying people should trash our streets in order to create employment? Recently, a huge whale beached itself and eventually, while it was being dissected, a huge plastic was found inside its stomach.

The amount of litter in our oceans is unbelievable. Some of it has started choking and killing sea life. Sadly, we have people who trash the environment deliberately because they are unhappy about something.

When members of the South African Municipal Workers Union protest, they always trash the streets. Protesters seem to derive joy in blocking streets with rubble while burning tyres and causing all sorts of pollution.

I hope acts of these football fans will inspire change in our habits.
