Ntate Lehlohonolo Johannes Monakale will be missed by the community of Alexandra, northern Johannesburg, where he lived a life of purpose.

Gentle, polite and soft-spoken, Monakale embodied good neighbourliness. He was always helpful around Tsutsumani where he operated his taxi business and often came to the rescue of the needy.

His daughter Fikile remembers him as “kind, loving, understanding and a good listener”.

“He loved people and worked well with them. He also loved his family to bits,” Fikile said.

Monakale was born on June 19 1937 in Mohale’s Hoek, Lesotho.

He was the son of the late Nkonyane and Angelinah Monakale.

He started his working life in Bloemfontein, Free State, before moving to Gauteng in 1964 to work for a steel company.

He held different positions in several companies until he retired working for a milling company in Randfontein on the West Rand. Monakale ventured into the taxi business until he took his final retirement about three years ago.

He was one of the founding members of the Christian Men’s Ministry (CMM) of the Uniting Reformed Church in Alexandra, and he died still committed to the cause.

Monakale took his last breath at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital last week Tuesday after being transferred from Edenvale Hospital following a long illness.

He is survived by his wife Christinah, two sons Modise and Tshepiso, four daughters Fikile, Mpela, Thembi and Refilwe; nine grandchildren, one great granchild and three brothers.

Robala ka khotso Mofokeng!
