Cheese Boy prays for PSL return via rookies

Former Bucs star leaves impression at Highlands Park

- By Sihle Ndebele

Almost forgotten winger Lebohang “Cheese Boy” Mokoena could make his return to the elite league.

The 31-year-old is training with Highlands Park, with the hope of reviving his career after spending last season without a club.

Mokoena last appeared in top flight football with Ajax Cape Town where he only played six games.

“So far so good. I am giving my all because I want to return to the Premiership. On Sunday we played a friendly match and I played well. Now it all depends on coach Owen da Gama if he signs me,” Mokoena said yesterday.

“I cannot mention names but when we were playing that friendly someone from that team we were playing against was impressed. He told me if Highlands do not sign me he will snatch me.”

The former Bucs and Mamelodi Sundowns attacker reckons he still has some years left before he can hang up his boots.

“Since I parted ways with Ajax I have been training on my own. I couldn’t just sit at home because I love football. I feel very strong. I can still play seven years before I can consider retirement,” noted the lad from Diepkloof, Soweto.

Da Gama seems impressed by what he has seen from Mokoena.

“He is looking very sharp. He is a good player; remember that I coached him at Orlando Pirates as well [in 2007]. You always try to give a player a chance and see what he can give you,” Da Gama said.

“It will take a few days for us to come to a decision. The issue is that one of our directors is not around.” I cannot make any comment until he’s back.”
