One-sided story tarnishes image of an already tainted African culture

-

Firstly, I am not advocating for the subjugation of women, under any circumstance.

I am merely appalled at the article headed “When culture is used by men to advance subjugation of women” and its one-sided view.

The writer says he went to a maleonly gender sensitisation workshop, then launches into what may have been said by one individual.

He says those horrible words were uttered by a man of African culture, but this deeply offends me as an African myself.

The article suggests that in African culture, women have no rights and are all treated disgracefully.

This is not true! What really irks me is that he didn’t bother to interview someone who had a different opinion, so this article paints African culture as misogynistic.

The writer shouldn’t only write from a negative perspective, though it is atrocious that some men do think this way.

But it is not all of us.

I am not saying that women abuse does not happen – it does and yes, it should be explored and uprooted, but painting a whole race/culture/ethnicity in this manner cannot be acceptable.

Maybe he was just trying to shock people into not being misogynistic, but I think he only managed to tarnish our already tarnished image. Scelo Mtolo e-mail
