Line-up to bring old and young together

- By Patience Bambalele

Stars of the moment Sho Madjozi and Shekhinah will share the stage with other female musicians in celebration of women’s achievements.

Dubbed Tribute to Women, the event will take place on Women’s Day at Emmarentia Botanical Gardens.

Sharing the stage with the two stars will be Zonke, Mafikizolo and Lady Zamar. The festival will also give a platform to women doing fine arts, and writers to showcase their work.

According to festival director Joe Chakela, Tribute to Women will be an annual event to celebrate the success of women.

Chakela said: “But at the moment we wanted to start with women in the arts. We realised that there was no outdoor music event that was about women in Gauteng.

“We started with an allwomen line-up and later we will have men who will celebrate women.

“We are speaking with Write Associates about getting women who have published books to display their work and talk to young people. In this way we are trying to create role models.”

Chakela is experienced in hosting festivals having handled the Mangaung Arts and Cultural Festival (Macufe) for years, and he expects nothing but success at the first Tribute to Women festival.

“I have been producing the Divas event at Macufe for many years and I have seen it grow into a prime event.

“I could not think of a more central and scenically beautiful space than the Emmarentia Botanical Gardens for an afternoon out with the family or friends with a picnic basket enjoying our diverse line-up.”

He said they opted for a lineup that is loved by both young and old people.

“Both Sho Madjozi and Shekhinah are loved by young people. While Zonke is loved by older people.”
