New Clever Boys go to top of class

Chiefs in home loss with Wits’ 3-1 win

- By Gomolemo Motshwane

Kaizer Chiefs coach Giovanni Solinas tasted his first defeat as Bidvest Wits’ new signings ran riot in their 3-1 victory last night.

For the second game in a row Wits scored three goals as Deon Hotto, Terrence Dzvukamanja and Gift Motupa found the net.

Despite it only being his second game in charge, Solinas is already feeling the wrath of the supporters as the Italian lost his first home game.

Five of Wits’ acquisitions from the off-season started the game while for Chiefs, Khama Billiat was the only new signing fielded.

Solinas received a tough fixture draw to begin his tenure as he has had to face the two most successful coaches in the PSL era: Pitso Mosimane and Gavin Hunt.

The pair are the only two coaches in local football who can boast winning every title on offer (Premiership, MTN8, Telkom Knockout and Nedbank Cup) in the PSL.

Wits were clearly still in the mood following their 3-0 thrashing of Free State Stars at the weekend as they took the lead in the 23rd minute.

Leonardo Castro equalised through a header after a Billiat free-kick in the 33rd minute.

The university outfit soon retook the lead via a Dzvukamanja header in the 43rd minute.

Wits’ new boys were once again doing the damage as soon after the interval Motupa scored in the 47th minute.

Meanwhile, in Polokwane last night, Mamelodi Sundowns beat Polokwane City 20 with goals from each half by defender Ricardo Nascimento and newly signed attacking midfielder Lebohang Maboe.
